We live in a world obsessed with “doing it all.” Multitasking is praised as a superpower, and busyness is worn as a badge of honour. But are we being productive, or are we just spinning our wheels?
The truth is, our brains aren’t wired for constant juggling. As Glenn Wilson, former visiting professor of psychology at Gresham College, London, puts it, we’re suffering from info-mania. His research shows that just having that unread email lurking in your inbox can slash your effective IQ by 10 points! Think about that – it’s like voluntarily taking a hit to your intelligence.
So, how do we escape this info-mania and reclaim our time and brainpower? Here are a few strategies that will not only bring a sense of relief but also empower you to take control of your productivity:
1. Mono-tasking is the New Multitasking:
Our brains are not designed to multitask effectively. One of the most effective ways to combat info-mania is to embrace mono-tasking. Instead of scattering our attention across multiple tasks, we need to cultivate the discipline of focusing on one thing at a time. By dedicating our full attention to a single task, we can complete it more efficiently and produce higher-quality work. This means actively eliminating distractions like closing unnecessary browser tabs, silencing our phones, and finding a quiet workspace. Setting a timer can also help us stay on track and maintain focus.
2. Tame Your Inbox:
Another crucial step is taming the beast that is our inbox. Constantly checking emails disrupts our concentration and fuels the feeling of overwhelm.
To regain control, we need to establish boundaries. Turn off those distracting email notifications and designate specific times in your day for checking and responding to messages. Utilising filters and folders can further enhance organisation and ensure that important emails are noticed.
3. Prioritise Ruthlessly – You’re in the Driver’s Seat:
Prioritization is key in the battle against time. Not all tasks are created equal, and we need to become ruthless in identifying those that truly deserve our attention. Tools like the Eisenhower Matrix, which categorizes tasks by urgency and importance, can help us focus our energy where it matters most. By tackling high-impact tasks first, we ensure our efforts align with our goals, giving us a sense of control and empowerment.
4. Schedule Breaks:
In our quest for productivity, it’s easy to forget that our brains need time to recharge. Scheduling short breaks throughout the day is essential for maintaining focus and preventing burnout. These breaks can be as simple as getting up to stretch, stepping outside for fresh air, or practising mindfulness. Giving our minds a chance to rest allows us to return to our work with renewed energy and clarity.
5. Embrace the Power of “No”:
Learning to say ‘no’ is a powerful act of self-preservation. We often feel obligated to say ‘yes’ to every request, which can quickly lead to an overloaded schedule and chronic stress. By politely declining commitments that don’t align with our priorities, we protect our time and create space for what truly matters, thereby safeguarding our time and energy.
Learn to decline requests and commitments that don’t align with your priorities, or drain your time and energy. Protect your time like the valuable resource it is. Take a look at our previous blog post here, which was filled with tips on how to say no.
Time is not just a resource; it’s your most valuable asset.
Escaping the clutches of info-mania requires a conscious shift in our mindset and habits. By embracing mono-tasking, taming our inboxes, prioritising ruthlessly, scheduling breaks, and saying “no” when necessary, we can reclaim our focus, boost our productivity, and rediscover the power of truly present and engaged living.
Don’t let info-mania steal your time and mental energy! Take control, prioritise, and focus – your brain (and your to-do list) will thank you.
