Futurist Anders Sorman-Nilsson vividly describes our times:
“We live in a world where change has never been this fast… and will never be this slow again!”
He’s absolutely right. Technological advancements are accelerating at an unprecedented pace, allowing us to accomplish more than ever. But this progress comes at a cost.
We’re constantly bombarded with information, deadlines are tighter, and the pressure to “do more with less” is relentless. No wonder we’re feeling the strain of operating in perpetual overdrive. We yearn for an extra hour in the day, a chance to catch our breath and reclaim some semblance of balance.
While a 25-hour day remains in the realm of science fiction, there’s a powerful tool we can leverage to regain control: energy management.
Instead of chasing the impossible dream of more time, what if we focused on maximising our existing time by optimising our energy levels? Imagine feeling fully engaged and productive at work and having the energy to enjoy your life outside of it genuinely.
Energy Management isn’t about some magical productivity hack. It’s about working smarter, not harder. It’s about understanding your own unique energy patterns and aligning your tasks accordingly. This understanding can be a powerful tool, empowering you to prioritise what truly matters and ruthlessly eliminate the rest, giving you a sense of control over your time and energy.
Here’s how to start reclaiming your time and energy:
1. PrioritisePrioritise like a pro: Not all tasks are created equal. Learn to identify your most important tasks and tackle them when your energy is at its peak. For many, this means tackling the most challenging tasks in the morning and leaving less demanding tasks for the afternoon slump.
2. Embrace your natural rhythm: Are you a morning person or a night owl? Work with your natural energy flow, not against it. Schedule your most demanding work for when you’re naturally most alert and focused.
3. Banish energy vampires: Identify and eliminate the things that drain your energy. This might include:
- Endless meetings: Be strategic about which meetings you attend. Can the information be shared in an email or a quick phone call instead?
- Constant notifications: Turn off non-essential notifications on your phone and computer. Schedule specific times to check email and social media.
- Toxic people: Limit your exposure to negative people who drain your energy.
4. Recharge your batteries: Schedule regular breaks throughout your day to rest and recharge. Even a few minutes of mindful breathing, a quick walk, or a chat with a supportive colleague can make a world of difference, leaving you feeling refreshed and revitalised.
5. Fuel your body and mind: Pay attention to your diet and exercise habits. Eating nutritious foods and getting regular exercise will help you maintain consistent energy levels throughout the day. For example, start your day with a balanced breakfast, include healthy snacks like nuts and fruits in your work routine, and make time for a quick walk or stretch during your breaks. These small changes can make a big difference in your energy levels.
6. Don’t skimp on sleep: Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night. Sleep deprivation is a major energy zapper.
By implementing these strategies, you can escape the overdrive and reclaim your time and energy. You’ll not only accomplish more at work, but you’ll also have the energy to invest in the things that truly matter in your life – your relationships, your hobbies, and your well-being.
