How to design a 2026 your future self will thank you for
I love how refreshing a new year can feel! After a much-needed break to reset, relax, and reconnect, the start of a new year offers something powerful. A clean slate and a chance to intentionally design the kind of leader you want to become by the end of the year ahead.
During the holidays, I listened to a fantastic podcast featuring Reese Witherspoon (love her!). She shared a line that stayed with me:
“Saving money is investing in your future self.”
Don’t spend it now; save it for the person you’re becoming.
It’s a financial idea, but it’s also a leadership philosophy. Every decision you make today, every courageous conversation, every boundary you set, and every capability you develop is a deposit in your future self’s success. Isn’t that a cool concept?!
So, how do you design a 2026 that your future self will genuinely thank you for?
1. Define who you want to be by December 2026
Leadership doesn’t happen by accident; it’s shaped by intention. Research shows that leaders with a clear “future self-vision” make more strategic decisions and remain more resilient under pressure.
Start with reflection:
- How do I want to be described as a leader at the end of the year?
- What impact do I want to have on my team and organisation?
- Which strengths do I want to amplify?
- What leadership behaviours do I want to be known for?
Think of this as your 2026 leadership identity. This then becomes your compass for the year.
2. Apply future-self thinking
Reese’s (yes, I feel like we’re on first name basis) future-self concept is simple but powerful: protect your future you by investing today.
In a leadership context, “investing” looks like:
- Choosing development over comfort
- Prioritising long-term capability over short-term speed
- Building relationships before you need them
- Protecting your wellbeing because burnout is a debt you pay later
- Setting boundaries now that create freedom later
Every choice today expands or limits your future options.
3. Link today’s behaviours to long-term impact
Your future leadership effectiveness is shaped less by dramatic reinventions and more by consistent micro-behaviours repeated over time.
Here are high-impact leadership investments for 2026:
Build a signature capability
Choose one skill whether it’s communication, strategic thinking, executive presence, influencing… that will elevate your leadership and commit to it fully.
Protect your energy
Peak performance research shows that sustainable high performance is built through energy rituals, not longer hours.
Prioritise strategic thinking time
Even 30 minutes each week creates clarity, improves decision quality, and shifts you out of firefighting mode. A note on this – our best ideas come when we step away from BAU. So each week, take a walk (no EarPods, just silence), sit in nature with no agenda. Make the space for your brain to create.
Strengthen key relationships
Mentors, sponsors, peers and team members accelerate your career far faster than capability alone.
Lead intentionally
Pause daily to ask: Is this aligned with the leader I want to become by the end of this year?
Small steps. Big payoff.
